TNFD Seeks Co-chair, Appoints Advisors

Elizabeth Maruma Mrema has stepped down as Co-chair of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) to focus on her roles as UN Assistant Secretary-General, and Deputy Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). Appointed with fellow Co-chair David Craig in June 2021, Mrema oversaw the development and adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at COP15 in December 2022, in her capacity as Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The TNFD issued its final recommendations for the disclosure of nature-related risks, impacts and dependencies by corporates and financial institutions in September last year. Mrema will continue her involvement with the taskforce as one of eight newly appointed senior advisors, alongside Andre Hoffmann, Vice-Chair, Roche; Andrew Mitchell, Founder, Global Canopy; Hiro Mizuno, ex-CIO, Government Pension Investment Fund of Japan; Lucy Mulenkei, Co-Chair, International Indigenous Forum for Biodiversity; Paul Polman, ex-CEO of Unilever; Curtis Ravenel, Senior Advisor, Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero; Rhian-Mari Thomas, CEO, Green Finance Institute; and Simon Zadek, Co-CEO, NatureFinance. “I am particularly delighted that the final recommendations serve as a mechanism to operationalise the objective of Target 15 of the GBF,” said Mrema. “In just over two years, we have delivered the recommendations and have also welcomed our first cohort of early adopters of the TNFD.” In January, the taskforce named the first 320 organisations that committed to adopt its recommendations, including more than 100 financial institutions with a combined US$14 trillion in AUM. The TNFD has started the process of finding Mrema’s successor.
