The Science-based Targets initiative (SBTi) has unveiled the first 15 members of its new Technical Council, as well as appointing Anita Sheth as its first Compliance Director. The council is a permanent, independent decision-making body appointed and overseen by the SBTi Executive Board that looks to strengthen its technical decision making. It aims to help “maintain the robustness and credibility” of SBTi standards, methods and guidance, with its members participating in a personal capacity and serving a two-year term starting from 1 July 2023. Professor Kornelis Blok, an energy systems expert and lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports, will act as the Council’s Chair, with corporate climate mitigation expert Laura Draucker announced as Vice Chair. The other members of the technical council are Pankaj Bhatia, Dr. Anders Bjørn, Dr. Ben Caldecott, Dr. Steven Davis, Pedro Faria, Dr. Michael Gillenwater, Owen Hewlett, Mandy Rambharos, Dr. Stephanie Roe, Dr. Nicole Röttmer, Prof. Doreen Stabinsky, Dr. Simi Thambi, and Virginia Vilariño. Blok said: “I am honoured to have been appointed Chair of the SBTi Technical Board and look forward to working with this group of experienced and independent experts from around the world. I am committed to serving this role with the utmost rigor, contributing to make the initiative even stronger in coming years.” The SBTi’s new Compliance Director has more than two decades of experience in enabling organisational compliance with relevant standards and regulations, including policy development and implementation for major international organisations. These organisations include Save the Children and Fairtrade International, with Sheth joining from the latter. Sheth said: “I am impressed by the SBTi leadership team’s commitment to further enhance the SBTi compliance systems. I look forward to working with them and the wider team to ensure that the SBTi is an exemplar of best practice in this field.”
