Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) has announced the first close of its 1GT Climate private equity strategy, securing US$500 million in equity commitments from public and private investors. 1GT invests in growth-stage companies seeking to collectively avoid or remove one gigatonne (GT) of CO2 equivalent emissions from the date of investment through to 2050. These companies span mobility, power, sustainable food and agriculture, and circular economy themes. 1GT is classified as Article 9 under the EU’s Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR). Vikram Raji, MSIM’s Head of Climate Private Equity Investing and 1GT, said: “Reaching our halfway goal is an important milestone. Our anchor investors have demonstrated a strong level of climate ambition by backing 1GT with its twin goals of investing in compelling high-growth companies in Europe and North America, while aiming to deliver transformational climate impact at the GT level. Tying the team’s incentive compensation to both of the 1GT goals recognises this in equal measure.”
