Mirova, GenZero, Rubicon Fund South Africa Restoration

French asset manager Mirova, investment platform GenZero and carbon credit management firm Rubicon Carbon have made a joint investment in the first phase of a large-scale ecosystem restoration project in South Africa. Launched by Imperative, a carbon project developer focused on the Global South, Project Phase 1 aims to restore 100,000 hectares of land across through active replanting across the Eastern and Western Capes. At full scale, the project will remove over 30 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, contributing significantly to global carbon reduction and removal efforts, Imperative claimed. “This is the first major project from Imperative’s pipeline to reach final investment decision,” said Imperative CEO Scobie Mackay. “We are grateful to have the support of such a high-quality club of funders and we look forward to demonstrating delivery and large-scale positive impact on the ground.” The project was designed to restore natural habitats, enhance local biodiversity, and sequester CO2 from the atmosphere, thereby contributing to global decarbonisation efforts. It should also help to increase direct foreign investment into South Africa, as well as generate training and employment opportunities in the country. “By supporting innovative, quality-driven, high-integrity projects that provide solutions for the regeneration of highly degraded ecosystems, private and corporate investors can contribute to the transition towards a net zero and nature-positive economy,” said Charlotte Lehmann, Senior Investment Director and Head of Carbon at Mirova. “This requires huge amounts of capital, especially in emerging markets,” said Charlotte Lehmann, Senior Investment Director and Head of Carbon at Mirova.
