ISS Highlights 2024 ESG Investor Trends

ISS ESG, the sustainable investment arm of ISS STOXX, has released its annual global outlook report, identifying 10 key ESG risks and opportunities likely to impact investor portfolios. The report kicks off ISS’s 2024 ESG themes and trends thought-leadership series. It drew on comprehensive data, research and insights from financial research and sector leads, climate specialists and regulator experts. Some of the global trends which ISS ESG said investors would likely focus on this year included: rising demand for critical minerals as inputs for renewable energy shapes M&A in the mining sector; the dramatic expansion of digital health technology; the rapid integration of generative AI into products and services; the global regulatory push for standardised climate-related disclosures; and the challenge of identifying firms with superior ESG performance. “Regulation, technology, natural capital, and climate change are among the major forces likely to shape the ESG investment landscape in 2024,” said Bonnie Saynay, Global Head of ESG Investor Research at ISS ESG. “Environmental concerns as well as the risks and opportunities raised by emerging and evolving technologies such as AI have encouraged regulatory and other legal responses. All these factors, combined, form the context for companies and investors in 2024.”
