The UN Climate Change High-Level Champions have issued a call to action for Race to Zero (RtZ) participants to align their advocacy, policy and engagement with net zero goals. The call to action outlines specific steps for non-state actors signed up the RtZ campaign to support and demand ambitious net zero policies and regulations. By utilising their influence, non-state actors can drive the creation of supportive environments that facilitate a just transition to net zero for all stakeholders, said the High-Level Champions. The call to action was endorsed by the We Mean Business Coalition, which released its ‘Ambition to Advocacy’ framework, designed to provide tools and best practice to enable companies to “match their climate advocacy to their climate ambition”. The call also draws inspiration from the recommendations of the UN Secretary General’s High-Level Expert Group on Net Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities and the Pivot Point report, both emphasising the importance of translating voluntary climate action into fundamental economic rules. “While voluntary action to reduce emissions is critical, policy and regulation is needed to deliver the reductions that we need urgently at speed, and scale. All non-state actors should align their own advocacy activities with a just transition to net zero, but should also call for ambitious net zero policy through what’s widely become known as the ‘Ambition Loop’,” said Razan Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28.
The @hlcchampions today call on all non-state actors to join the #RacetoZero and align their advocacy, policy and engagement with net zero goals.
