Decade-Long Growth Spurt for EU ESG ETFs – PwC

As of June 2022, just over a quarter of the total 1,806 EU-domiciled ETFs have an ESG label and are classified as Article 8 or 9 under SFDR, according to research by Big Four accountancy firm PwC. Between 2012 and 2020, the EU-domiciled ETF market has grown at a compound annual growth rate of 18.7%, the report noted, compared to a 9% growth rate for EU-domiciled UCITS over the same period. Further, over the past 12 months, 214 out of the 421 EU-domiciled ETFs newly listed on European stock exchanges are ESG ETFs, PwC said. Robert Glover, Partner of Global Fund Distribution at PwC Luxembourg, said: “This year’s annual ETF poster reveals the continuing push of the largest ETF providers into some of the major markets, where they have previously not distributed. With these managers typically offering a very broad range of products, we have seen a sizeable number of new registrations in these markets.”
