Global carbon ratings firm BeZero Carbon has partnered with the Earth Observation and Geoinformatics Division at Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) to improve carbon estimates in the Amazon. According to BeZero, Brazil has “more carbon credit projects claiming to avoid deforestation than any other country in the world”, with these credits made available on the voluntary carbon market (VCM). The ratings company is particularly targeting improvements to its estimates for projects that claim to avoid deforestation and forest degradation. Through the partnership, BeZero will support postgraduate research in remote sensing at INPE focused on the Amazon rainforest’s carbon stocks. BeZero also recently collaborated with environmental intelligence company Kayrros to enhance its VCM project assessment, with Kayrros’ satellite-based mapping of the Amazon basin incorporated into BeZero Carbon’s ratings. Camila Silva, Remote Sensing Ecologist at BeZero, said: “The VCM needs greater transparency to scale. These partnerships will help improve and advance remote sensing estimates and measuring capabilities, which in turn will support BeZero’s ratings and risk analysis.”
