AI Misuse, Climate Change Imminent Global Risks – WEF

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven misinformation and disinformation has emerged as the foremost imminent global risk followed by concerns of extreme weather events, according to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Risks Report 2024. Based on a survey of nearly 1,500 experts assessing global risks, the report has been released a week ahead of the WEF’s annual summit in Davos, Switzerland. At the summit, global leaders will discuss pressing issues including AI as a driving force for the economy and society. The WEF warned that regulatory efforts may struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of development, even as measures emerge to combat online disinformation and illegal content. At the report’s launch event, Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director at WEF, said the responses illustrated a “fairly pessimistic outlook” as the world enters 2024 which diverged significantly from the previous year where there was still longer-term optimism. Causes included climate change being no longer being seen as just as a risk, but considered to be a structural force already unfolding and shaping the analysis of other risks. Survey respondents also identified societal polarisation, the lack of economic opportunity, inflation and economic downturn among the top 10 risks in the next two years.
