The 30% Club, a Chair and CEO-led global campaign that looks to increase gender diversity to a minimum of 30% female representation at the board and executive committee levels, has appointed Hanneke Smits as its Global Chair. Smits is the CEO of BNY Mellon Investment Management, and will succeed Ann Cairns as the organisation’s fourth Global Chair. Smits founded Level 20, a not-for-profit organisation established to inspire women to succeed in the private equity industry, in 2015. She is also Executive Sponsor of PRISM, BNY Mellon’s LGBTQ+ employee group, and has been CEO of US$1.8 trillion AUM asset manager BNY Mellon Investment Management since October 2020. On her appointment, Smits said: The role of the 30% Club is as vital now as it was at launch in 2010. Even today, the baseline target of reaching 30% women – either at board or senior management level – remains a stretch for many organisations throughout the world. I look forward to continuing to grow the 30% Club internationally and tackle a wider range of diversity challenges, inside and outside the boardroom.”
